				**Mecaru animal sacrifices—including goats, cows, water buffalo, roosters, swans, ducks, pigs and dogs—are made to the buta kala negative spirits which reside near the ground. Blood sacrifice is for purification. While it may seem cruel, the sacrificial animals are treated with great esteem and respect, prayed over and assured a better life form in their next reincarnation.
